How to Migrate to Western Australia

Migration to Western Australia can be achieved by applying for either a State/Territory sponsored visa, or via Federal visa programs offered by the Australian Government’s Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC).

The Western Australian Government sponsors the following visa schemes:

  • Skilled Regional Sponsored Visa
  • Skilled Sponsored Visa
  • State/Territory Sponsored Business Visas
  • Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS)
  • Temporary 457

Skilled Regional Sponsored and Skilled Sponsored Visas

The Skilled Regional Sponsored and Skilled Sponsored Visas are designed to meet the State’s identified skill shortages and are administered by the Western Australian Skilled Migration Centre.  These schemes make it possible for migrants to live and work in  areas where skills shortage have resulted from the State’s strong economic growth.

Skilled Regional Sponsored Visa - Available for people under 45 years of age. Applicants must possess good English language skills and employment skills that will contribute to regional Western Australia. The Skilled Regional Sponsored Visa is a provisional three year visa, which can lead to permanent residency.

Applicants should ideally have a skilled occupation included in the WA Skills in Demand List. The Skills in Demand List offers a greater range of opportunities for skilled workers in a broader range of occupations than the Priority Skills List which is used to asses Skilled Sponsored applications.

Skilled Sponsored Visa – Available for people under 45 years of age. Applicants must posses good English language skills and and an occupation that is on the State’s Priority Skills List. The Skilled Sponsored Visa provides permanent residency.

Detailed information on the Skilled Regional Sponsored Visa and Skilled Sponsored Visa  schemes, and online application forms, are available on this site.

While you might find that you do not meet the requirements for migrating to Western Australia under the Skills Migration programs, you may qualify under State/Territory business migration schemes.

State/Territory Sponsored Business Visas

Business Visas are aimed at business owners, senior executives and investors who would like to become part of the State's vibrant business community. Business Visas are administered by Western Australia ’s Small Business Development Corporation (SBDC), and detailed information regarding business skills migration can be found on their web site.

Regional Sponsored Migration

As an alternative to State Government sponsored migration, skilled migrants can also be sponsored by an employer  (Temporary 457 and RSMS visa programs). This situation arises when a business in Western Australia has difficulty filling a position locally and has been approved to recruit someone from overseas.

Under these programs, appropriately skilled migrants can be sponsored by employers to fill vacancies on either a long term temporary or permanent basis. The Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS) is a visa which provides permanent residency for migrants in any of Western Australia’s magnificent regional areas.

Most skilled visa classes are restricted to occupations with trade/diploma level qualifications and above. However, due to the ongoing skill and labour shortages in regional WA, it is possible for regional employers to request a waiver on the skill level.

The Temporary 457 and the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS) schemes are facilitated by each of the Regional Development Commissions. You can discuss the requirements for these visa schemes with the skilled migration officer at each Commission or refer to DIAC’s Booklet 5 (Employer Sponsored Migration) and Booklet 11 (Sponsoring a Temporary Overseas Employee to Australia).
