Jobs in Perth

Perth is home to around 1.5 million people and was recently rated as one of the world’s top five ‘most liveable cities’ by the London-based Economist Intelligence Unit.

Perth enjoys more hours of sunshine than any other capital city in Australia. Sophisticated yet uncomplicated, the lifestyle in Western Australia is a relaxed one.  Some 30 per cent of Perth's population was born overseas. Society is extraordinarily harmonious and all newcomers and visitors feel welcome.

To many overseas visitors, Perth is unique among the world's cities, despite its tall city buildings, extensive freeway system and state of the art electric trains. Perhaps it's the friendly people; perhaps it's the sprawling low-rise suburbs. Most homes are only one or two storeys, surrounding the capital; perhaps even the easy-living Mediterranean-style climate or perhaps it's the beach. Wherever you live in Perth you are never too far from the Indian Ocean.

Perth offers an enormous range of employment opportunities for skilled migrants. Most of the State’s resources and mining services companies are based in Perth, along with a strong manufacturing industry, which accounts for approximately 9 per cent of Gross State Product, 10 per cent of employment and 7 per cent of the State's exports.

The services sector, which accounts for about 70 per cent of the State’s economic activity, is also highly competitive in the areas of education, health and biotechnology, building and construction, information technology and engineering.

There are several dedicated employment agencies and networks such as those listed below that can help to identify employment opportunities in Perth:

• Seek
• Jobs WA
• MyCareer
• JobSearch.com.au
• JobSearch.gov.au
• The West Australian

In addition to the websites highlighted above, the following industry sectors are currently experiencing major skills shortages and offer good employment prospects for skilled migrants.

Marine Industry
Minerals and Energy
Biotechnology

The Australian Marine Complex (AMC) located in Perth's southern suburbs, is a world-class Centre of Excellence for manufacturing, fabrication, assembly, technology, repair and maintenance servicing activities in the marine, defence and resource industries.

Many of the companies located in the AMC are eager to recruit skilled labour, particularly people who have metal trades and engineering skills.

A list of companies located in the AMC is can be viewed at the ‘Local Industry’ page of the Australian Marine Complex website.
